MaterialCycle Physical Products focus on building small-scale, modular ecological infrastructure and living systems that produce food, manage water, and support healthy ecosystems in compact spaces or at large scale.
The products are designed to be modular, scalable, and easy to transport, allowing systems to start small and expand over time.
At the centre of the physical product range are the Grow Towers, which form the core ecological infrastructure.
These towers act as vertical support systems that can accommodate plant growing modules, water treatment components, and other ecological functions within a small footprint.
The towers are designed to operate as standalone units or be connected together to form larger ecological systems.
Supporting the towers are Tower Accessories, which include additional modules, fittings, upgrades, and replacement components that expand the functionality of the towers.
These accessories allow the system to be adapted for different uses such as food production, water purification, drying, or other small-scale infrastructure functions.
The product range also includes Plants, divided into two main categories:
Aquatic Plants such as duckweed, water lettuce, and salvinia, typically used in water systems, nutrient cycling, and fish food production
Terrestrial Plants such as herbs, vegetables, and climbing plants, typically grown in tower modules or surrounding garden systems
To support plant growth and system performance, Soils & Amendments form a key part of the physical offering.
These include growing media and nutrient inputs such as composts, biochar, mulches, crushed eggshells, coffee grounds, and other natural materials that improve soil structure, fertility, and water retention.
To complete small ecosystem systems, the range may also include Fish and Small Pond Life, which contribute to integrated water ecosystems and nutrient cycling.
MaterialCycle Physical Products are not standalone items, but rather a modular ecosystem product range consisting of:
Grow Towers (core infrastructure)
Tower Accessories (system expansion and upgrades)
Plants (aquatic and terrestrial)
Soils & Amendments (growing media and nutrient inputs)
Fish and small pond life (ecosystem components)
Together, these components form adaptable ecological systems that can be combined to produce food, manage water, recycle nutrients, and build efficient, living infrastructure in limited spaces or at large scale.
MaterialCycle Towers are currently used for easy, low-maintenance gardening โ but this is only the beginning.
The whole system is designed to grow with you. As the ecosystem expands, tower owners will be able to add a range of clip-on modules that unlock powerful new functions.
Planned future modules include:
โ๏ธ Solar Distillation Modules
Convert dirty water or seawater into clean drinking water using only the sun.
๐
Solar Dehydration Modules
Preserve food with passive solar energy โ perfect for sun-dried tomatoes and more.
๐ Beekeeping Modules
Support pollinators and harvest small batches of honey.
๐ง Water Filtration Modules
Clean water for eco-pools, aquaponics, fish ponds, or garden irrigation.
๐ฟ Air Purification Modules
Improve indoor or outdoor air quality using plant-based filtration.
๐ก๏ธ Temperature Regulation Modules
Shape and stabilize your micro-climate through clever water circulation.
๐ Acoustic Optimization Modules
Use flowing water and sound-absorbing design to soften harsh city noise.
And this is only the start โ many more modules are still to be explored and developed.
Modular Plant Growing Unit
(250 mm diameter ร 500 mm deep)
The MaterialCycle Grow Tube is a durable, fully reusable plant-growing module designed for growers who value efficiency, longevity, and minimal waste. It integrates seamlessly into the MaterialCycle tower system, combining robust construction with practical features that support high-quality plant production in compact, vertical spaces.
Rather than treating growing containers as disposable items, the Grow Tube is designed to remain in continuous use across many planting cycles โ supporting a more resilient and circular way of growing.
The tube and removable base plate are constructed from 1 mm clear polycarbonate sheet, selected for its strength, weather resistance, and recyclability at end of life. All bolted connections use small stainless steel bolts and nuts, ensuring corrosion resistance and easy disassembly for repair or recycling.
Snap-fit mounting clips are made from long-lasting UV-stabilised LDPE, designed to withstand prolonged outdoor exposure while remaining flexible and replaceable.
This material strategy keeps the Grow Tube simple, durable, and compatible with circular economy principles.
Plants grow inside a clear cylindrical tube, supported by a suspended removable base plate resting on four aluminium rods. Excess irrigation water drains freely below the base plate, preventing waterlogging while maintaining a well-aerated growing medium.
The transparent tube allows growers to easily monitor soil structure and moisture content, enabling accurate watering and healthier plants without disturbing the soil.
Any water that drains below the base plate is captured by the towerโs reservoir and recirculated back to the plant, forming a closed-loop system where water and nutrients are conserved rather than lost.
When a plant is ready to be harvested, transplanted, or sold, the four aluminium support rods can be removed, allowing the base plate to be dropped out together with the entire plant and root ball fully intact.
This approach enables:
Stress-free transplanting
Clean harvesting
Sale of mature plants without destroying the growing container
Once the plant is removed, the Grow Tube remains fully reusable and ready for immediate replanting โ a significant advantage over conventional potted systems where containers are often discarded after extraction.
The section of transparent tube above soil level doubles as a mini greenhouse, providing valuable wind shelter for young plants while still allowing full sunlight penetration. This is especially beneficial in windy outdoor environments, where early-stage stress can slow or damage growth.
Wind protection and plant support can be extended upward using clip-on wind shelter / plant support rings, allowing growers to adapt protection as plants grow taller.
Additional shelter and support attachments are sold separately.
The Grow Tube is designed to work as part of a larger system, where:
๐ง Water is captured, reused, and never wasted
๐พ Nutrients remain within the growing loop
๐ Growing remains efficient even in water-scarce conditions
This makes the Grow Tube particularly well-suited to sustainable food production and long-term outdoor setups.

๐ฟ Peace in the Home
(Soleirolia soleirolii)
Planted in a Self-Watering Repurposed Bottle Planter
๐ฟ๐งโป๏ธ
Peace in the Home, also known as Babyโs Tears, is a delicate creeping plant that forms a soft carpet of tiny bright green leaves.
It grows on thin stems that spread across the soil and gently trail over the sides of the container, making it perfect for desks, shelves, windowsills, or small hanging displays.
Each plant is planted in a self-watering planter made from a repurposed glass beer bottle.
The bottle is cut in half, and the neck section is placed upside down into the bottom half, which holds the water reservoir.
A wick draws water up into the soil as the plant needs it, creating a simple passive watering system.
The reservoir can often last more than a week before needing a refill, depending on temperature and light.
Price: R120 each ๐ฟ
About the Plant ๐ฑ
Peace in the Home is a fast-growing plant that can spread to form a dense green cushion. In good light it may produce tiny white flowers.
It can also be planted under larger potted plants as a living ground cover, creating a lush layered look.
Care Guide โ๏ธ
โข Medium to bright indirect light
โข Keep soil moist but not waterlogged
โข Prefers moderate to higher humidity
โข Normal indoor temperatures are perfect
โข Trim occasionally to keep compact and full
If the plant dries out it may droop, but it usually recovers quickly after watering.
Very wet soil with no airflow can cause rot, so consistent moisture is best.
Part of the MaterialCycle idea โป๏ธ
This planter is part of a bigger idea โ turning everyday waste materials into useful, long-lasting growing systems.
Glass bottles become planters, organic waste becomes soil, and small systems connect into larger living systems over time.ย

South Africans love a good Braai.
After the braai is finished, people are left with the remnants โ usually a mixture of ash, small pieces of charcoal, and partially burnt wood. Most of this gets thrown away, but those small black pieces are actually very useful.
Why buy BraaiOChar instead of using your own braai leftovers?
Most people throw away their braai charcoal or mix it with ash without realizing the difference. Separating, crushing, and drying charcoal for safe and effective soil use takes time, effort, and some know-how. BraaiOChar is ready-to-use: it is clean, crushed to the right size, free from ash, and consistent in quality. It saves time, removes guesswork, and ensures that every handful added to your soil or compost is actually improving soil health โ no messy sorting or testing required.
During a braai, wood or charcoal burns with heat and oxygen.
If a piece of wood burns completely, it turns into ash.
But many pieces do not burn completely because:
The fire runs out of oxygen
The braai is closed
The heat drops before the wood finishes burning
Larger pieces only burn on the outside
When this happens, the wood does not turn into ash. Instead, it becomes charcoal โ wood that has been heated and partially burned but still keeps its structure.
This charcoal is mostly carbon and is full of tiny pores and holes inside the material. These tiny pores are what make charcoal, also known as biochar, very valuable for soil.
The porous structure of charcoal works in soil like a sponge and a habitat.
When added to soil, charcoal can:
๐ง Hold water for longer
๐งช Hold nutrients in the soil
๐ฌ Improve soil aeration
๐ฆ Create habitat for beneficial microbes
๐ฑ Improve root growth
๐ Improve soil structure over time
Instead of nutrients washing out of the soil when you water plants, the charcoal helps store nutrients and release them slowly.
This is why biochar has been used in agriculture and is well known in fields like Permaculture and regenerative agriculture.
Many people think ash and charcoal are the same, but they are very different:
โ ๏ธ Ash: Very alkaline
๐ค Biochar: Mostly carbon
๐ง Ash: Contains salts
๐ณ Biochar: Porous structure
๐ฅ Ash: Can burn plants if too much is used
๐ฟ Biochar: Improves soil structure
๐งฎ Ash: Used in very small amounts
๐ชด Biochar: Can be mixed into soil
๐ง Ash: Dissolves in water
๐บ Biochar: Stays in soil for years
BraaiOChar is charcoal, not ash.
The charcoal is separated from ash before crushing and packaging.
Commercial biochar is usually:
Made in special kilns
Produced at controlled temperatures
Very uniform and consistent
Often very fine or very light
Sometimes activated or pre-loaded with nutrients
Usually more expensive
BraaiOChar is different because:
It comes from real braai charcoal
It is recycled from a waste material
It is crushed into practical soil-sized pieces
It is heavier and chunkier, which improves soil aeration
It is locally sourced and recycled
It has a much lower environmental footprint
It is more affordable
Commercial biochar is a manufactured soil product.
BraaiOChar is a recycled material turned into a soil product.
Both improve soil, but BraaiOChar also helps reduce waste and close a material loop.
Every braai creates leftover charcoal.

Mix into:
Garden soil
Pot plants
Compost
Raised beds
Vegetable gardens
Recommended mix:
5โ10% BraaiOChar in soil or compost
Tip:
For best results, mix BraaiOChar with compost, worm castings, or liquid fertilizer before adding to soil.
